When it comes to selecting the right email marketing service for your midsize business, there are a multitude of factors to consider: How do available features factor into monthly cost? What are the limitations of this service? How many emails can we send per month?

Fratzke is here to compare any email marketing service your marketing leaders are interested in. If you’re just dipping your toes into the proverbial email marketing service waters, we’ve compared three of our favorites below.

If your midsize business is searching for a partner in selecting or optimizing your email marketing service, schedule a free 1-on-1 consultation with a Fratzke expert today.

    What is Mailchimp?

Mailchimp is an extremely popular email marketing service given its surplus of available features and intuitive interface. With a few clicks, you can draft and schedule email campaigns, create automated sends, A/B Test subject lines and preheaders, and get reports on essential email marketing key performance indicators (KPIs).

Mailchimp (recently acquired by Intuit) is a great choice for marketing leaders or teams new to email marketing software. The email editor is extremely easy-to-learn thanks to their library of available resources, even when it comes to more advanced features like multi-step journeys or e-commerce integrations. The service also provides reports and recommendations based on your email campaigns’ performance.

    Mailchimp Pricing

Each Mailchimp pricing plan has contact list and monthly send limits. While all plans include a limit of 10,000 email sends per month, each plan tier is scaled based on available features and number of contacts. Note that users who opt-in to security features and nonprofit organizations are eligible for a 10 and 15% discount respectively.

Free: $0 per month | Up to 2K contacts | Up to 10K monthly sends

Essentials: $9.99 to $270 per month | Up to 50K contacts | Up to 10K monthly sends

Standard: $14.99 to $540 per month | Up to 100K contacts | Up to 10K monthly sends

Premium: $299 to $1,190 per month | Up to 200K contacts | Up to 10K monthly sends

    What is HubSpot?

We recommend HubSpot as an email marketing service for midsize business leaders looking to include their email marketing into an all-in-one customer relationship management (CRM) software. HubSpot is a great service with tools that support a variety of digital marketing channels, including website and social marketing in addition to email. It can also track the progression of leads in the sales funnel and keep all their contact information up-to-date.

In terms of reporting, HubSpot is a one-stop-shop. Marketers can easily see how specific contacts interact with their website, social media, email campaigns, and Google ads. We also love their expansive collection of resources. While there may be a bit of a learning curve from the get-go, HubSpot offers a plethora of tools to house the majority, if not all of, your digital marketing executions.

    HubSpot Pricing

Although there is no low-cost or free-forever HubSpot pricing option available, you and your team can test out the service via a 14-day free trial. While you can store as many as 15M contacts, the number you send emails determines the pricing tier you fall into. Note that a 10% discount is available for users who pay for the annual plan versus month-to-month payments.

    Starter: $50 to $4K per month | 1K to 100K contacts | Up to 5,000 daily sends*

    Professional: $890 to $4.4K per month | 2K to 87K contacts | Up to 5,000 daily sends*

    Enterprise: $3.2K to $40K per month | 10K to 1M contacts | Up to 5,000 daily sends*

*Varies if send is an email sequence.

    What is Klaviyo?

One of Fratzke’s top picks for e-commerce-based midsize businesses, Klaviyo provides best-in-class recommendations on how to increase engagement from your contact list through personalization, segmentation, and A/B Testing. With added SMS marketing capabilities, connect with your client base via personalized texts as well.

While it may take a bit of bandwidth to traverse the first few learning opportunities, Klaviyo is worth the investment based on the added data science. This science provides tailored recommendations for each customer, formulating strategic next steps based on their purchasing habits. While Klaviyo’s overall cost may be priced slightly higher than Mailchimp’s equatable tiers, Klaviyo offers additional features like coupon code generators, back-in-stock automations, and advanced pop-ups.

Klaviyo pros and cons by Fratzke

    Klaviyo Pricing

If you’re looking for a free-forever plan, Mailchimp’s offer certainly beats out Klaviyo in both contact and monthly send limits. However, Klaviyo provides more advanced features to compensate for their limited free plan (and increased price margins). While Klaviyo doesn’t constrict to a specific tier system, compare the prices below with Mailchimp’s pricing and monthly send limits.

Free: Up to 250 contacts | Up to 500 monthly sends

$60: Up to 2K contacts | Unlimited monthly sends

$700: Up to 50K contacts | Unlimited monthly sends

$1.2K: Up to 100K contacts | Unlimited monthly sends

While investigating Mailchimp, HubSpot, & Klaviyo are all great jumping off points for your email marketing service research, Fratzke recommends trialing each platform or consulting with an email marketing expert to ensure you land on the best service for your midsize business needs.
